Resolution
Manually setting up or configuring Windows 2000/XP workstations to run PLATO Pathways and courseware can be very time-consuming. The SETPERMS Utility automates the following workstation configuration procedures:
- Sets NTFS permissions for the \TEMP, \WINNT\PWAY or \WINDOWS\PWAY, and WCMIWS.INI folders and files
- Runs the WorldView setup program for WorldView versions 1, 2 or 3
- Creates CyberEd subfolders in the \WINNT or \WINDOWS folders and assigns appropriate permissions to them
- Registers the MSWINSCK.OCX file used in Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 courseware
- Bypasses the proxy server for local addresses
- Runs the WSETUP.EXE (workstation setup) program if has not already been run on the workstation
- Moves the PLATO Pathways icon to the all-users desktop
Download the SETPERMS Utility
Download the SETPERMS utility from the support site: Download SETPERMS.ZIP
Before You Run SETPERMS
- Install your PLATO Pathways system and courseware if you haven't already done so.
- If PLATO Pathways is installed on a network, map your workstation drives to the server PLATO Pathways is installed on, if you haven't already done so.
- At each workstation, temporarily disable antivirus and security software and close all open programs.
- Make sure you log on to your workstations with administrator privileges.
- Make sure that there is a PLATO Pathways shortcut in the Desktop folder under C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\(YOUR ADMINISTRATOR USER NAME)\DESKTOP. If it isn't there, copy it from wherever the PLATO Pathways shortcut was installed when you ran WSETUP.
You should answer "Yes" to create a desktop shortcut when you run WSETUP so that this shortcut is created in your administrator user's desktop folder and will be ready for SETPERMS to copy it to the All Users desktop folder.
Also make sure that there is NOT a PLATO Pathways shortcut in the C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\DESKTOP folder, otherwise SETPERMS will give an error message.
How to Run SETPERMS
After you download the SETPERMS.ZIP, use an unzip program such as WinZip or PKZip to unzip the SETPERMS.VBE file.
TIP: Save SETPERMS.VBE to a floppy disk or CD-ROM. You will then be able to run SETPERMS at each of your workstations. Follow the steps below to run the utility:
-
Insert the CD or floppy disk you saved the SETPERMS.VBE file to in the workstation's CD or floppy drive.
-
Use My Computer to open the CD or floppy drive and view its contents.
-
Double-click the SETPERMS.VBE file.
-
If you have installed all your PLATO courseware, click Yes to continue. A message displays, explaining what the utility will do.
-
Click Yes to continue.
-
Enter the drive that PLATO Pathways is installed on, then click OK. (If your PLATO Pathways system is installed on the network drive Q:, just click OK.)
-
Enter the User or Group used for PLATO Pathways, and then click OK. (Just press "Enter" or click "OK" for Everyone.) A message displays, saying permissions will be set for the User/Group named you entered.
- Click Yes to continue.
Please wait while the utility runs. When the utility is finished, the following message displays:
Workstation permissions are now set for user/group...
Click OK to exit.
-
Click OK.
- If you see this message:
Unable to move the current user's PLATO Pathways icon to the All Users Desktop!
it means that either the PLATO Pathways shortcut was not found in the current user's desktop folder or the shortcut is already in the All Users desktop folder. If the shortcut does not appear in the C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\DESKTOP folder, then copy it there from wherever it was installed.
The workstation is now configured and ready to run PLATO Pathways.
Repeat these instructions and run SETPERMS at each Windows 2000/XP workstation that needs to be configured to run PLATO Pathways.
