Upgrade your CHPWLN (Client-Hosted PLATO Web Learning Network) System:
Find instructions for upgrading CHPWLN (Client-Hosted PLATO Web Learning Network) on the CHPWLN upgrade page on the PLATO Support site. There may also be a copy of the instructions on the upgrade CD.
You can also find release notes discussing what system and/or courseware updates are included in the upgrade. System and courseware upgrades are combined in the CHPWLN upgrades, so following the procedures to perform the upgrade will include both.
Back up your system before upgrading:
Before you upgrade your Client-Hosted system and courseware, make sure you back up your system.
The files you need to back up depend on whether your Client-Hosted PWLN system uses a SQL or Paradox database.
If you are not sure which database system you have, go to the login screen for CHPWLN. At the bottom left, click the Version link. If the pop-up window refers to "SQL," you have a SQL database. Otherwise, you have a Paradox database.
If using SQL: There is a backup folder named PWLNBAK on your SQL server. Back this up to tape or other removable media. This file is usually located in the D:\PWLNBAK folder.
If using Paradox: Back up the entire D:\PATHWAYS\DB folder.
Perform the upgrade:
To upgrade your Client Hosted PLATO Web Learning Network system, follow the upgrade instructions on the Documentation CD in your upgrade kit or on the PLATO Support Web site.
You will run the upgrade on your data server(s) (SQL or Paradox) first, and then on the web server(s). You will need to run the upgrade procedure on each server box.
Courseware upgrade is included:
When the upgrade runs on the Web server, the system will check whether the most recent courseware versions are installed. If any courseware needs to be upgraded, the system will prompt for the appropriate courseware CDs included in the CHPWLN upgrade binder. Insert the CDs to upgrade the old courseware if prompted.
If the most recent versions of courseware is already installed, the upgrade will not prompt for any courseware CDs and the upgrade procedure will be completed once the upgrade is finished running.
After you run the upgrade, if there is a a Supplemental Disc, insert the Supplemental Disc in your server's CD-ROM drive and install the files on the Supplemental CD. (Follow the Supplemental Instructions on the Documentation CD.)
