Resolution

Class-Level  Assignments vs. Learner-Level Assignments:

Summary:   Class-level assignments are given automatically when a learner is added to a class.     Learner-level assignments must be assigned individually.

Class-Level Assignments

When you create an assignment, the default setting for the Add assignment to learners that join this class option is ON (the box is checked), which means that any users added to that class in the future automatically receive ("inherit") any class-level assignments that have been created for that class. Use this option when you want all students added to the class later to receive the assignment automatically.

Note:

  • When you create an assignment, checking the Add assignment... box will make it a class-level assignment even if you  initially deselect some students in the class.

  • An assignment created as a class-level assignment remains class-level even if students are removed from the assignment later; new students added to the class will still inherit the assignment.

Learner-Level Assignments

If you do not want new class members to be given the assignment automatically, uncheck the Add assignment to learners that join this class box when making the assignment.   Use this method when you want students added to a class not to receive the assignment automatically.

Note:

  • When creating an assignment, leaving the Add assignment... box unchecked will make it  a learner-level  assignment even if you  assign it to all students in the class.

  • An assignment created as a learner-level assignment remains learner-level even if all students in the class are added later.

To create a class-level assignment:

  1. Select Curriculum Planning > Find PLATO Courses > locate the course or title to assign.

  2. Next to the title to assign, click Create Assignment.

  3. Using the filter settings, locate the class.

  4. In most cases, you will leave all students selected (checked),

    or:

Sometimes, you may decide to deselect some students by clicking the box next to each to uncheck them, or you may click Deselect All and then select some students by clicking the box next to each to check them.   Note:   Deselecting students will uncheck the Add assignment to learners that join this class box.

  5. If you deselected students, click the Add assignment to learners that join this class box  to put the check back in.

  6. When you have finished with all selections, click OK to save the assignment.   When you add students to the class in the future, they will also receive this global assignment.
  7. IMPORTANT:   The next time that you add a student to the class, verify that the student does receive the assignment automatically.

To create an individual assignment to one or more students (no inheritance):

  1. Select Curriculum Planning > Find PLATO Courses > locate the course or title to assign.

  2. Next to the title to assign, click Create Assignment.

  3. Using the filter settings, locate the class.

  4. You may leave all students selected (checked),

    or:

deselect some students by clicking the box next to each to uncheck them, or you may click Deselect All and then select some students by clicking the box next to each to check them.   Note:   Deselecting students will uncheck the Add assignment to learners that join this class box.

  5. If you left all students selected, click the Add assignment to learners that join this class box  to uncheck it.

  6. When you have finished with all selections, click OK to save the assignment.   When you add students to the class in the future, they will not automatically receive this individual assignment; you will need to add them individually if needed.

  • IMPORTANT:   The next time that you add a student to the class, verify that the student does not receive the assignment automatically.

  • If you want to give the student the assignment, search for the assignment using Account Administration > Classes and Assignments > Assignments tab > enter search criteria, then click Add/Remove at the list of students, locate the new student and add the student to the list of students for that assignment.
