File structure of the FOCUS application

FOCUS may be installed to run locally from a CD or from the local hard drive. Multiple users cannot launch and share the entire FOCUS Reading program from a single copy installed on a network file server.

Following is the directory structure of FOCUS, regardless of how it is installed:

Windows workstations:

  +\---PLATO | +\---FOCUS Reading | | +\---BIN | | | +\---DBS (contains the ADMINDB files, which hold student records and track each student's progress) | | | | +---ADMINDB.DAT | | | | +---ADMINDB.IND | | | | +---ADMINDB.VDB | | \---XTRAS

(if running from CD, minimum install)

Macintosh workstations:

  +\---APPLICATIONS | +\---FOCUS Reading | | +\---BIN | | | +\---DBS (contains the ADMINDB files, which hold student records and track each student's progress) | | | | +---ADMINDB.DAT | | | | +---ADMINDB.IND | | | | +---ADMINDB.VDB | | \---XTRAS

(if running from CD, minimum install)

What rights or permissions do students need to run FOCUS?

Students must have read-write access to the administrative database files, wherever they are located. The administrative database files store the students' records and track their progress.

Windows 98SE/ME workstations

In Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows ME terms, students need Read-Write access to following files:

\PLATO\FOCUS Reading\BIN\DBS\ADMINDB.DAT
\PLATO\FOCUS Reading\BIN\DBS\ADMINDB.IND
\PLATO\FOCUS Reading\BIN\DBS\ADMINDB.VDB

Windows XP/2000 workstations

Windows 2000/XP Professional workstations using NTFS (NT File Security) require "Modify" permissions to be assigned to the following files. (Windows 2000 Professional workstations using a FAT32 file system do not have this requirement.):

\PLATO\FOCUS Reading\BIN\DBS\ADMINDB.DAT
\PLATO\FOCUS Reading\BIN\DBS\ADMINDB.IND
\PLATO\FOCUS Reading\BIN\DBS\ADMINDB.VDB

If you are unsure which file system your workstation uses, right-click on the local hard drive of the workstation. (usually C:) and then click Properties. Your workstation's file system type is listed under the "General" tab.

Macintosh OS workstations

Students need read-write access to the following files:

\APPLICATIONS\FOCUS Reading\BIN\DBS\ADMINDB.DAT
\APPLICATIONS\FOCUS Reading\BIN\DBS\ADMINDB.IND
\APPLICATIONS\FOCUS Reading\BIN\DBS\ADMINDB.VDB

RELATED INFO

The administrative functions for the student record database are contained in the FOCUS Teacher program. The administrative database holds the class listings, class rosters, (student names), custom group settings (lesson plans for groups of students within your class), and student records. This database also holds all student progress information. Each time students enter and exit the program, new information is saved to a record, marking their progress and saving performance information.
