Plug-In Test
| How to test and install plug-ins required for PLE |
The plug-ins required to run PLE courseware depends on what type of
courseware you are running. See the information below this section
on how to install the various plug-ins. Use this links here to test
that your plug-ins are successfully installed. A successful test
should pop-up a new window on your screen with messaging that the
installation is successful. If you do not see the popup, refer to
instructions on how to configure your pop-up blockers: Article 12164
| Test Macromedia Flash and Shockwave Installation

You should see a pop-up window like this:

If Flash and Shockwave are properly installed, you will see the two movies play telling you that the players are installed.
If you do not see the popup, refer to instructions on how to configure your pop-up blockers: Article 12164
If you need to install Shockwave, you will see a message like this:

If you need to install Flash, you will see a message like this in the pop-up window:
You should see a pop-up window like this:

If Authorware is properly installed, you will see the movie play telling you that the player is installed. If you do not see the popup, refer to instructions on how to configure your pop-up blockers: Article 12164
If you do not see the movie, look for an "information bar" at the top of the page. It should look like this:

Click the bar and follow the directions to install the player.

You should see a pop-up window like this:

If the Xtras need to be installed, follow the prompts on the screen. You should see at least five (5) prompts like this:

Once all of the Xtras are installed, you will see a message like this:

You should see a pop-up window like this:

If the Adobe Reader is installed on your computer, the PLE System Requirements document should open. If you do not have Acrobat Reader installed, you will see this message:

If you do not see the popup, refer to instructions on how to configure your pop-up blockers: Article 12164.
If you do not see the PDF document, click here to install Acrobat Reader:
Install Acrobat Reader The installation may take several minutes.

Detailed Instructions (these apply to both Windows and Mac OS X workstations):
In the instructions that follow, clicking on the underlined links will take you to the location where you can download and run the installation of the various plug-ins.
- If you have multiple computers to be used to run the PLATO Learning Environment (PLE), it is recommended that you install the plug-ins on all of them ahead of time, so that students can log on and access learning activities right away.
- If you are installing plug-ins on a Windows workstation, log in as a local workstation administrator so that you have
sufficient permissions.
- Install the latest version of Adobe Reader to view Portable Document Format (PDF) files, including many offline activities used in PLATO Courses, reports, learner guides, teacher and curriculum guides.
- Install the
Adobe Flash Player to be able to use the PLE learner menu, teacher and administrative functions, and most of the PLATO Courses and titles.
- If you will be using any of the following titles, download and install both the
Adobe Shockwave Player and
PLATO Xtras plug-ins:
- Basic Skills for the Real World
- Beginning Reading for the Real World (including Skills Inventory)
- Job Skills for the Real World
- Math Expeditions (including Skills Inventory)
- Projects for the Real World
- If you will be using Biology Series or Chemistry series, download and install the
Adobe Authorware Player plug-in.
- Restart your browser to allow all changes to take effect.
